For years, I just drew a single line straight across. Never got challenged.

Same for me on digital receipt pads: I treat them like an Etch-a-Sketch. In USAF, the *act* of signing is itself a lawful signature. From the mid-1980s onward (after my tour in NATO), I used only my stylized initials to sign for classified documents. Never got questioned.

After my teachers learned my handwriting I started signing all my work with a pen name and none of them ever noticed and one even insisted I couldn’t have done that or they would have noticed

I've written "ASK FOR ID" in the signature area on the back of my card. You'd be shocked to know the number of sales people that do the obligatory flip-over inspection of the card "signature" to compare to my actual signature and just hand the card back. autopilot=no security.

I always make sure to thank the ones that ask for ID to drive home the importance of paying attention.
