I hosted a call with dozens of TL leaders, and Police Captain, about how we can ensure effective social distancing, support for unhoused neighbors, and to protect health of all TL residents. Thanks to everyone who participated--lots of good solutions we will work on and fight for

I hope some talk included doing something about the hordes of dealers. Had I awoken from a coma today, I’d have no clue we’re weeks into a quarantine. Everybody is out, like always.

We discussed this at length, and I've spoken to the Captain dozens of times. What do you think they should do? They are going out there multiple times a day and attempting to break things up. It hasn't worked.

I’ll assume you are earnestly asking my opinion
and I’ll tell you what I told Fabbri: BEAT COPS. I’ve lived here since 1996 and a unicorn sighting for me is seeing a police officer walking around here. Get out of the damn cars. I understand how enormously boring that will be.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

I imagine being a dealer standing on one street corner for 12 hours is pretty boring too. Boredom surely helps motivate their harassment of everyone. My intent is not arrests or deportations or any of that crap. It is to create an environment less hospitable for open dealing.

BUT I certainly don’t want policing to be a miserably boring work day. Alternatively, maybe look into a volunteer corps to stand around everywhere? Mixed in with volunteers is the occasional beat cop? Either way, none of this is forever...

We’re under a quasi-quarantine. This seems like the ideal time to do it. If we leave large clusters of dealers every half-block to openly ply their trade during a quarantine, when will we ever do anything? What message to residents does ignoring it, especially now, send?

It is a fabulous time, while so few cars are in the road, to go after the delivery cars. Those beat up late model cars that pick up cash from the dealer crew chief, restock him with drugs, and brings food to the crews. Those cars are surely a gold mine. Disrupt that.

Follow them! Where are they dropping off all that money? Where are they picking up all the drugs? I’ve been watching them do this for 20 years. I may not know much about policing but, damn, seems like obvious low-hanging fruit. In a quarantine? How can we miss?

It’s exasperating and I know you know. I am just perplexed it seems so ordinary and normalized even during a pandemic. I cannot refrain from the notion that there will never be a better time than now to attempt a serious effort of some kind. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

All this is great, but in this city, @chesaboudin will not prosecute for those crimes. IMO it’s not worth it for cops to risk getting sick for crimes that will be dropped. SF voters have created this, now they must deal with the ‘progressive, liberal’ decisions of the politicians
