It's obviously pretty hard to figure out what's going on, but some average of these 4 scenarios is probably the most likely eventual outcome when Iowa eventually counts its vote:

Perfectly good advice btw. As a young scholar it just feels quite pointless trying to remedy systemic problems by individual action - or keep feeling guilty for engaging in subpar academic overproduction in the hopes of securing a permanent future in academia.

For instance, UK exams (2-hour, in-class, closed book) are IMO detrimental to international students. US LLMs, in contrast, are usually much more flexible (8-hour exams, take-home exams, essays), allowing international students to get better grades…

    5. PhD. If you plan to apply for a PhD after the LLM, you should consider the requirements of admission for the PhD beforehand. It is also important to pay particular attention to assessment methods.

    (c) The author also matters. I keep getting requests to write recommendation letters from students I had when I was a teaching fellow a few years ago. I am happy to write them, but I consistently recommend them to reach out to the very senior, generous members of the faculty.

Consider asking someone else. If you think her/his letter is particularly important, consider asking a friend/colleague to draft it for you. (b) This has been said a million times but is worth repeating: the content of the letter matters much more than the author. But…

    4. Letters of recommendation. (a) DO NOT WRITE YOUR OWN LETTERS. Admissions officers complain about this all the time. It is very easy to tell who has written her/his own letters. If your referee asks you to write it yourself…

    3. Essays. If there is a text box in your application form… that is an essay! It doesn’t matter if the word limit is 40 words. Respond the question in the most interesting/appealing possible way. Reviewers are reading tons of applications. Stand out.

Some of the best law schools may not offer courses in your areas of interest or have faculty specialised in those areas. It is very common to come across unhappy grad students in great schools for precisely these reasons.

    1. Choose! Not all law schools/programmes are made equal. Sure, check the rankings. Sadly, rankings are important. But they will not tell you everything. Some programmes will be critically oriented, some not; some will favour economic analysis of the law, others will not.
