please do not advocate for basic lab goggles to be worn to protest, they cannot withstand impacts from less lethal rounds and will just add shrapnel to any eye injuries. use high impact rated goggles for construction, paintball or even airsoft. use the right PPE for the job.

The key with safety goggles is that they should be wraparound with good suction on your face + have shatterproof polycarbonate lenses

I bought cheap goggles on Amazon for mowing and other yard work that could launch projectiles at me. Is it worth investing in good goggles?

Yes. The goggles should be wraparound, suction onto your face, and have polycarbonate lenses at minimum
