Is it good practice to move for permission to go overlength at the 6th Circuit literally one minute before you file an opening brief that uses 17,681 of your allotted 13,000 words?

It's pretty standard on appeal to file the motion to go over length alongside the brief? And just go with whatever length feels right to you? Trial court I'd buy.

I'm aware that there are times/places where that kind of thing is standard. But I've also seen things reporting that the 6th is not fond of granting such requests. And the orders issued list for the past week shows lots of date extensions, no word/page extensions.

I had a Poli Sci professor who said we could write as much as we wanted but that he was only going to read the first ten pages. He'd make a mark at the bottom of the tenth page and stop reading when he got there. They ought to do something like that here.
