I'm surprised and delighted to find my book recommended here, and in such incredible company. I hope it offers some consolation to anyone who reads it. Thank you so much, : Tackle that to-be-read pile: the books to try if you're self-isolating

So, it seems that Boris Johnson was *not* in Perugia last weekend. Several reports that he was (including one from someone in Umbria direct to me), but sounds like a major version of Chinese (Umbrian) whispers, beginning with a mistake. Excitement over. Pandemic not.

I still find it weird that, after six months, the official government advice remains that single people should have no sexual contact with anyone else, indefinitely, and nobody’s even talking about it

Well, it looks like a game of Umbrian whispers. Ordinarily, a simple denial should be enough to clear a story up, but when you have a congenital liar in power, unfortunately it isn't.

How funny. I just wanted to check the official definition of "proclaim" for something I'm writing, and found this, in the OED: 'announce officially or publicly. "the government's chief scientific adviser proclaimed that the epidemic was under control"'. If effing only.

PS, If anyone wants the really short version of that press conference, it appears to be: we're f****ed.

  8. if you’d told me six months ago that we’d be in the same place six months later because this government paid Deloitte and Serco millions for a testing and tracing system that doesn’t work, headed by one of their mates, i’d probably be like.... sounds about right

Just spoke to someone in Tokyo and we did the obligatory pandemic small talk. When I told him the UK has sent millions of children & staff to school without masks in classrooms there was a prolonged silence. Then: Is your government insane?

God, after that press conference I'm not sure what advice to offer the PM (which I've been asked to do on show in about 15 minutes), but I'll have a go...

Downing Street is denying it - but backbenchers certainly believe 's excl, claiming the PM was in Perugia this month. One tells me the background on his Zoom call with Tory MPs that Friday "definitely wasn't the normal room in No 10"

  13. To all the libertarians & anti-maskers out there, it really comes down to this: “You cannot just take your own risk. You are taking a risk on behalf of everybody else.. eventually it will reach those who are vulnerable" - The way to survive a pandemic is together.

Of course they are. Perhaps they can bring some girlies along to make the tea? UK plan to use all-male team to host UN climate summit angers observers

So, quick summary of the press conference. 92% of us still susceptible to this potentially lethal virus, which will be with us for ever. Perfect start to the week, eh!

  18. Circuit breaker. Whack a mole. Squash the sombrero. Ramping up. Invisible mugger. Moonshot... How much less confusing would the government advice be if only they tried speaking in standard, plain, unpatronising English?

I'll be giving my advice to on show at midday. I only have a minute, so will have to cram it in! Let's hope he's listening (assuming he isn't in a castle with bad internet in Umbria)

I missed this last night, but can't wait to watch it. When I reviewed the book, I think I said that I couldn't imagine loving a novel much more. It's truly wonderful.
