I also find it really interesting that the "piracy" discourse is one where you can say a fairly uncontroversial thing - to wit "not 100% of pirated copies are lost sales," and get accused of everything from theft to the actual literal enslavement of writers. It's ludicrous.

there are so many games that I pirated in the past then later bought because I loved them so much and wanted the full updated/multiplayer/etc package. Plus, if it wasn't for modern emulation and the availability of pirated ROMs, I would never have played my favorite game
-
actually, hell, I never would have been introduced to my favorite *franchise* if it wasn't for my dad custom firmware hacking a PSP for me when I was a kid. Back then it was hard to find that many legit games in the Philippines for a decent price

People pirate for any number of reasons, many of which have been addressed by technological developments over the years - though the fact that in 2020 the only way to get TV a la carte is *still* a torrent client says just how much capitalism has learned from the exercise.
-
TV is specifically extra pirated because there's extra demand because of a lack of supply to like... three quarters of the world because distributors can't seem to understand that people outside the States or Canada or Europe or Australia might want to watch their show
