  5. The Yomiuri Shinbun has this wonderful, daily "editor's column," which today observes that "plum" 梅 and "chrysanthemum" 菊 are unusual kanji in that their Japanese (kunyomi) readings are also borrowed from Chinese, reflecting their transmission from China

    Oddly - was down for the count today bedridden and reading George Steiner when I saw the news. “A book unwritten is more than a void...It is one of the lives we could have lived, one of the journeys we did not take. Which might have allowed one to fail better. Or perhaps not.”

    Vināyaka 毘那夜迦, also known as Gaṇeśa these days, was a prominent figure in Chinese Buddhism for a century (mostly ninth century as far as I can tell). The tradition connected to him survived until modernity in Japan. He is still there, known as Kangi-ten 歡喜天.
