Playing with Open3D and a RealSense depth sensor. Takes 5-10 for mini reconstructions. Alignment sometimes fails. Here is a video showing the resulting .PLY file (a B+ grade result) viewed in MeshLab.https://youtu.be/KfK07dH_KNg

realsense has consistently disappointed, B+ is very generous given what you can get from even a gen 1 kinect

I agree, the B+ result is after a bunch of failed reconstructions. I miss the quality of the primesense and Kinect.

structured light is increasingly starting to feel unnecessary in many applications though, esp. given progress in photometric SLAM. some smart way to get a dense mesh and we're there

guess this is kind of core to Magic Leap's value prop though heh

If you are looking for a way to experience 3D mesh creation, then Magic Leap One meshing is really great. Plus you wear it! I spend most of time at work with photometric techniques for SLAM, and I agree that depth sensors will go away soon.

bilinear interpolation with a total variation term has been working well for me lately

not very principled though since I just pretend the depth image is piece wise continuous
