Here's the academic job (wiki) numbers for History, prompted by @benmschmidt. Caveat: I'm not a historian, but it seems the market is fairly stable (unlike English). Also: European Hist is only field semi-rising, while Asian, African, Middle East, & Global Histories are falling.https://twitter.com/quadrismegistus/status/1196729083478134785 …

Ran the numbers for History myself since I was nervous that weird idiosyncrasies I ran into for English Lit might crop up here, but I got largely similar results. pic.twitter.com/peNe5eZrZ4

Glad we have numbers we can point to. Do you have numbers for the late 1990s for comparison? There are still people who see this as a similar “slump” as if this is just a weather pattern and not climate change.

I don't have pre-wiki numbers for History, though @benmschmidt might. For English, we have the numbers put out by MLA a few years ago. The numbers don't line up perfectly, given different sources (wiki vs. JIL), but the post-2013 trend seems similar:https://twitter.com/quadrismegistus/status/1196485341844299776 …

Unfortunately not: the wiki started in 2007; its formatting standardized ~2011; and it may not have caught on until 2013. FWIW, I'm attaching these and the MLA's data jenkily photoshopped together. Not perfectly comparable, which we would expect, but the post-2013 trend is there. pic.twitter.com/1jCG44HZ3t

If there's a split b/t English and History, that's quite interesting; I haven't seen any substantial divergence in the undergrad numbers over the last decade.

European History is precipitously falling, so I am confused by the statement here.

Sorry, I wasn't being clear. Euro Hist is slightly rising 2011-2017; though it's falling since, 2019's job market season isn't over yet, so it may be too soon to say whether the 2018 decline will continue.
