In 2005, 4 million people experienced a simulated Apocalypse. They reacted in bizarre ways unanticipated by disaster experts, and now the same disturbing behaviors are emerging in the real world in reaction to coronavirus. My new article.

Compare this with the new "race science" paper, which presents a legitimation claim for a new field of possible truths. What new (institutionally valid) knowledge might be produced by it? What certain satisfactions might this knowledge permit?

Many papers that present legitimation claims appeal to the same capitalistic structure: legitimate this new truth and we can produce new knowledge, which can be leveraged for new pleasures (at the very least, the special university pleasure of "truth production").

The irony of the cultural appropriation discourse is that the "appropriations" in question have already occurred, the elements outside culture already reintegrated. But its critique represents a new form of excess, and the authors of such papers are successfully appropriating it.

Fussell's "X Class" aka the hipster class are the true capitalists (discursively speaking), because they survive by incorporating the excess back into the market, transforming into a new commodity that which was formerly outside the system.

living outside the symbolic economy vs leveraging symbolic commodities for your own profit vs embodying a symbolic commodity which others recognize as inherently valuable, constituting a piece of the field of symbolic value

    - bottom class: not signaling because you're busy surviving - low class: signaling - middle class: countersignaling - upper-middle class: signaling ironically by simultaneously signaling & countersignaling - upper class: signaling by not signaling because you don't need to signal

interesting twist: my roommate and her friend did the exact same thing a few weeks ago: enter with some expectation, feel disappointed, wait in line for the bathroom, then give up and leave

tfw ur friend convinces the crew to go to a "really cool spot" w "funky music" & u wait in line & pay a cover & it's a bland club playing 115 bpm "latin" "house" & u wait in line for the bathroom for ten minutes & realize u could walk home b4 the bathroom line moves, so u bail.
