For complex reasons I'm irked to discover that the ancient Egyptian god identified with the star Sirius was called "Sopdet", not, as I previously believed, "Sothis"

Absolutely all Ancient Egyptian names that end in "-is" are actually the Greek version of these names. Also, many of those that don't end in "-is" (e.g "Cheops"). I'm afraid the more correct forms are all gross nonsense-word for obvious cultural reasons.
