I literally couldn't figure out a happy ending which didn't overthrow previously established facts and thereby cheat the reader. But also, I don't think Laura necessarily deserves one

I'm pro-Actual Humanity but I can see how it would be impossible for them to win against an omnipotent omniscient AI. just a little bothersome that Virtual Humanity commits genocide scot-free. like, no one in virtuality did anything about it?

Laura definitely does not deserve a happy ending ("This was an extraordinarily bad idea.") but maybe some of the others do? idk, like you say, the story's pretty much locked into a downer ending at this point.
