you can imagine it as the area of fuel intake required if the vehicle could only “scoop up” fuel as it moved forward, like a ramjet (and if fuel economy were constant for all speeds)

i mean the most ‘fundamental’ measure would be the *dimensionless* efficiency of the engine, in terms of kinetic energy produced per chemical energy consumed, but thats not very useful to humans
