The thing which struck me about The Martian was that the film is an extremely faithful adaptation of the book. As were The Hunger Games and The Social Network

There can be different dimensions of faithfulness, too. The degree of literalness of the adaptation doesn't necessarily speak for or against the adapters GETTING what mattered about the book.

Like e.g. _Blade Runner_ is a very free adaptation but (arguably) GETS some of what is important about the book in a way that might've been harder for a more literal adaptation.
