The thing which struck me about The Martian was that the film is an extremely faithful adaptation of the book. As were The Hunger Games and The Social Network

This is a really good thing from the perspective of book authors about to get film deals. Of course it says nothing about film quality or book quality

It's less common, but slavish and mechanical adaptations of the text can also be problematic. But it usually takes a good screenwriting and directing team to change things for the better.

That's one of the things which impresses me, when they're brutal with the editing to get it down to two hours but still retain the spirit of the original
