The thing which struck me about The Martian was that the film is an extremely faithful adaptation of the book. As were The Hunger Games and The Social Network

This is a really good thing from the perspective of book authors about to get film deals. Of course it says nothing about film quality or book quality

This trend towards more faithful adaptations may connote increased respect by film and television creators for book readers as a group. That's probably a positive?

It may also be an increase of books that are easily adaptable (unknown effect) or of studios that hire book authors as consultants (positive for authors).

I think it connotes increased laziness and inability to come up with original material (cf comic book adaptations where the shots are ripped off from the pages)

Or a confidence that directors can render visually the parts of books that make them hard to adapt. Call Me By Your Name would be a great example of that
