we say this node here is the "parent" of these other ones. Because it's actually a family tree! that's why the nodes all have exactly one parent

so, just like a real tree, the single node at the very top of the tree is called the "root" these lines radiating away from it — downwards, like roots — are the "branches". Distance from the root is called "depth" the deepest nodes, obviously, are the "leaves"

People seem to like drawing at the top of a whiteboard, downwards, rather than starting at the bottom and drawing upwards. Maybe it has something to do with reading direction? Or subtitles/captions.

My assumption was always that people had the root at the top so they can say they travel "down" the tree and it agrees with gravity
