Unicode doesn't have a concept of string reversal, which means that arguably there is no such thing as a palindrome

Are you confusing that with byte reversal? Any string reversal is possible if you use the correct word size :)
In your book, what is the difference between string reversal and byte reversal?

word size (an ascii string uses 1 byte for each character where ase unicode uses variable length words depending on the encoding)
