Oh THAT's the solution! GIF = hard G, gif = soft G. The /ɡɪf/ is named icon dot /dʒɪf/.

I say a hard 'g' (like gift) to distinguish it from JIFF files (Mac extension). Also 'g' in Graphics [Interchange Format] has a hard 'g' too
