`1<<17` is shorter than `131072`. `~99` is shorter than `-100`. `1e9-7` is shorter than `999999993`. But when is such a substitution safe?

I seem to remember `NaN` not being a value in older browsers (only output, not input).

I know of no environment where the `NaN` global is missing, but I suspect that it, like `undefined`, may once have been reassignable
