Here's another Thud! endgame solution. Eight carefully arranged trolls trap the lone remaining dwarf in one of the free spacespic.twitter.com/OKjmPTx7jv
If the dwarf is in one of the four lone spaces, they have free movement between those four spaces but can't reach any of the others.
In this case, move the top right or bottom left troll to block one of the two exits, forcing the dwarf to the other.
You can then do the same with the troll at the other end of the board, leaving the dwarf with no reachable unattacked spaces.
Alternatively, if the dwarf is in one of the groups of three spaces, they have free run of that little area but cannot reach the other.
Without loss of generality, let's suppose the dwarf is trapped in the top left group of three spaces.
Move the top right troll left. Move the uppermost troll left. Move the bottom left troll up. Move the leftmost troll up. The trap closes.
Eight trolls is slightly too few to threaten the entire Thud! board, but just creating isolated free pockets seems to be effective.
Ensuring that those pockets are isolated is tricky. Closing the trap, once created, also tricky. Still...
Still, I am beginning to suspect that a strategy for seven trolls may exist. Albeit a complicated one.
