I was taught not to swerve, because this reduces braking ability and increases the likelihood of losing control.
I can't think of a single occasion when I've had to make a trolley problem-style split-second decision while driving.

I've been driven off the road a couple times by aggressive merging, the shoulder was empty, so the trolley problem was easy.

but it isn't always, and sometimes there isn't time to check, so you play the odds. 100% minor collision or X% very serious collision?
