But succ instead returns a value for convenience (read: crashes & unusability)
I think "enum" is a bad term for a programming construct which in my experience isn't usually meaningfully enumerable

Enums do get bound to numbers in practice, but that doesn't mean that e.g. the "successor" of FILE_RO should be FILE_RW

If all enumerations have to have a successor method, then Booleans shouldn't be an enumeration.

And it also means "an exhaustive pattern match is possible", which doesn't really mean "you could iterate over the values"
