I'm sure the explanation is mildly humorous at first and increasingly aggravating every time you have to explain it to someone else

The "because everything's bigger there" explanation doesn't work because half of the ASCII operators are smaller bytewise than the Unicode.

For example, U+1D452 "𝑒" which is 0xF0 0x9D 0x91 0x92, vs. an ASCII "e" which is one byte?
