It is true though that there are uses of italics that are more or less hardcoded in English grammar and don't correspond well to any existing semantic element Honestly, I'd kind of like it if the <i> element could reverse italics if applied within an already-italic context.
I use <i> for characters thinking, and inline definitions You can use CSS to make nested <i> tags render as normal

Sure, but I've sometimes wished there was, like, a "font-style: inherit-opposite-italic" so it could be automatic for arbitrary levels of nesting, i-within-em, em-within-i, i-within-paragraph-with-italic-css, etc. Sure, you can fill out all the combinations you need by hand but
