The thing is, it's actually completely fine to generate a GUID and then not use it for anything. That doesn't make a collision among the remaining, in-use GUIDs any more likely. It's not waste

UUIDs are great since you're so unlikely to hit a collision. In my programs I always start with 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 and move up sequentially.
