This was the same team who merged a fix of mine and then a month later I came back and asked them why the fix hadn't appeared downstream and it turned out they don't make new releases unless they're asked to

I once ran into an issue with a popular utility, found it was already reported 2 years ago by several people and there was an argument about whether the issue was intended ... and then I found out that the bug had actually been fixed in master 3 years ago but not yet released.

Tangentially related, autoconf last had a release in 2012, despite loads of commits to master since then. Distros may also have their own patches on top. So autoconf --version reports 2.69, despite this being essentially meaningless
