one IDE I used had Ctrl+Y mapped to like "delete line" instead of "redo" by default, that was a painful discovery

I always safety copy the entire file into a text document before I undertake such a dangerous mission

vim has an "undo tree" system so you can type, undo, type something else, and still get back to the first thing you typed. you can do undo/redo, older/newer, or jump to a specific numbered state. there's plugins to show you the tree to make it easier to keep track. it's great.

I do that all the time, and when I fumble the redo shortcut, I wish for shortcuts allowing me to navigate the full document history tree, not only the straight line that is Ctrl-Y/Z.
-
Vim has that! And honestly, just that on it's own would almost be enough to get me to use it. It's great. (That's not the only good thing, but it is very good)

I knew a dude in school who had a Russian Roulette program he would click while writing papers. He would write without saving, then 1/6 times the computer would crash.
