To be clear, I don't want to disparage COBOL. I know barely anything about it as a language. It being old is not a problem. The problem is the diminishing number of available programmers

C is definitely useful if you're doing high performance file stuf, command line programs, or things close to hardware. Good mental model for how the kernel thinks of things but yeah doing anything with desktop applications or extensive string work and it's pretty hellish
