To be clear, he is actually using vehicles when possible, but I'm probably not going to actually make this explicit in the story as it would be a little surprising and jarring at this late stage

Unless everyone happened to park or pull over just before the apocalypse, specific cars would be incredibly inconvenient. And unless there are lots of corpses around *inside* unobstructed vehicles, you're going to have difficulty matching found keys to cars
