I find it vaguely amusing that in Metroid Prime 2 Samus saves the entire Luminoth world from destruction because she has nothing better to do while she waits for her ship to repair itself

Another great, subtle bit of characterisation is the fact that Samus Aran's gunship has no name or consistent design, presumably because she is unsentimental and frequently outright replaces it between games

The Metroid Prime games hold up so dang well though. Maybe the polygon count is low by modern standards, but they're still crisp and slick and beautiful to look at, and immersive and challenging and rewarding

I love how you can look up and have rain fall on your visor. I love how when you go underwater, nothing happens except for mildly impaired movement and vision, because like hell were you EVER breathing the actual ATMOSPHERE on this planet

I love how every weapon is balanced well and in a boss fight you have to observe and think hard to choose the right attack for each phase, I love the steadily deepening dread as you descend the Phazon Mines and work out what Metroid Prime itself actually is

I do find it vaguely perplexing that the Chozo are this ancient extinct wise bird species but also they raised Samus Aran so presumably they only went extinct in like the last five to ten years

P.S. Samus Aran crows at dawn because she was raised by birds, it's canon https://www.awkwardzombie.com/comic/instinct
