I feel like this article is a bit of a distraction when there's a lot of valid problems that Teslas have which human drivers don't also havehttps://www.businessinsider.com/hackers-trick-tesla-accelerating-85mph-using-tape-2020-2?r=US&IR=T …

I mean, you could deface a road sign, fooling drivers into driving at the wrong speed, right now. You wouldn't fool everybody but you'd get a few folks. What's stopping you?

The Tesla's ability to see past graffiti, snowfall, bullet holes and what have you should indeed be as good as a human's, but I think the bigger question is why did the Tesla think it was safe or even legal to drive 85mph on that road, regardless of signage

It's because algorithms are autistic. (I have autism myself.) The car is unable to parse the social context of driving on the road and will do exactly as asked.

I think it may go deeper than that. The Tesla may not understand that the speed limit isn't a request. You don't HAVE to go that fast. The sign doesn't imply that it's safe to go that fast right now

You can legally go slower than the limit, and it can be the case that it's safer to do that. But usually the safest choice is to drive at the speed limit, since that's what others tend to do - if the limit is 85 and you drive 35, there's a serious risk someone will bump into you.
