I mean, you could deface a road sign, fooling drivers into driving at the wrong speed, right now. You wouldn't fool everybody but you'd get a few folks. What's stopping you?

The Tesla's ability to see past graffiti, snowfall, bullet holes and what have you should indeed be as good as a human's, but I think the bigger question is why did the Tesla think it was safe or even legal to drive 85mph on that road, regardless of signage

A temporary speed limit could be introduced for a day due to road works. Speed limits can change from minute to minute on smart motorways. GPS lookup could fail or the data could be incomplete. It could be a private road. The driver must be able to read signage with their eyes

The "road works, lookup failure" concerns suggest taking the minimum of the GPS and the signage, probably. Since when are temporary limits *faster* than on maps?
