Wait, is gold actually better for this than other metals? I'm not much of a tech person.

Gold doesn't tarnish like copper, so the quality of an electrical connection doesn't degrade with time. For fibre optic, it's pointless, because the signal is transmitted through fibre and the metal is just support. You can just use stainless steel or aluminium or whatever.
