Time travel in movies like Primer obeys a forking model. You need a Doc Brown-style chalkboard diagram with a "prime" timeline, and then a second timeline diverging from the original at the point where something arrives from the future and starts changing history

The unusual twist with Primer is that you never see the original timeline. Several times during the movie, entities from unseen futures arrive in the "present" intent on averting impending future events which never get shown
