I guess we now live in the post-"ads in the npm install log" erapic.twitter.com/pSnBnMDNSg

No amount of revamping open source software funding structures would have prevented this from happening eventually, nor can it make this go away now it's begun
Advertising in your install log is going to be as simple as dropping a banner ad on your website. Install log ads are going to have all the same problems and very familiar solutions
"Ads bring money to businesses" is not a fundamental rule of society. It's a cognitive bias which we can train people against. In fact we're developing resistances to media viruses just like viruses develop resistance to antibiotics.
Sure, but the fact that there even exists a motive to spew adverts in the faces of developers at all is pretty problematic and implies there's probably quite a lot wrong with how we fund tech and indeed industry in general.
I genuinely sympathize with this view but I don't think it's fair to characterize maintainers as greedy because they want to eat. Most maintainers are getting next to nothing for their work save for what they might be given by an employer (also a terrible model).
Ultimately if we want to avoid these kinds of approaches we need to put more effort into proving that an individual patronage model can work (and maybe this isn't possible till there's a broader overhaul of the whole system).
How much to sponsor one of your carbon atoms?
<o\ "We need a better funding model for our open-source project" /o/ "We need socialism"
most people who maintain open source aren't paid for it, so this isn't a case of trying to make "more money" at the margins, it's about capturing any value at all
This isn’t about money. This about starting a conversation. I want to improve the relationship between open source maintainers and consumers. The status quo is not working for a lot of maintainers. I wrote more about my intentions here:https://github.com/feross/funding/issues/13#issuecomment-524605063 …
"the status quo is not working for a lot of maintainers" -> it is about money
