What's the word for realising, eighty-five percent of the way through the book, that this is the first part of a trilogy, a fact not indicated anywhere on the cover

I'm going to call it "getting Three-Bodied" after The Three-Body Problem, which I just finished, which has two sequels and no substantial conclusion of its own and also isn't very good

The Three Body Problem is mediocre, and its praise is merely due to the modern fascination with China, a sort of new Orientalism

It's trading in some interesting ideas, like what would a mostly human-like civilisation look like if it evolved under a chaotic, unpredictable star system, but it's so simplistically written

Three body problem was the worst professionally published SF book I've read since Green Earth

The second book is amazing, and can serve as an ending to the story started in the second book. I often tell friends who do not enjoy reading to stop at the second book; the third book has a few great ideas and a handful of good scenes, but ends badly.

How much of that is in the translation? Books 1 and 3 are translated by Ken Liu, book 2 is someone else. I haven't read that series, but I did read Chen Quifan's "Waste Tide", also translated by Ken Liu, and enjoyed it.

I did this once, except I read the second part first without noticing (Same universe, different characters situation) and discovered not having the knowledge of the universe and mythology already established made it WAY better.

If it makes you feel better, the sequels are even worse!
