Question for people who use an RSS reader to follow https://qntm.org/rss.php . Did your reader show you the most recent update, from 2019-06-11?
Even if MySQL directly supported Unicode, which it or something in this stack clearly doesn't (I pasted the string, it came out wrong), it would still need Unicode escapes

My guess would be the table isn't configured correctly (by default it isn't). And no, you don't need escapes, because no UTF-8 character contains the byte for ' except for ' itself.
