MySQL doesn't need to escape Unicode because it supports it directly. However, if you don't explicitly make the table's charset utf8, it will horribly mangle any input you try to throw at it.

Even if MySQL directly supported Unicode, which it or something in this stack clearly doesn't (I pasted the string, it came out wrong), it would still need Unicode escapes

we have a thing that's accidentally embedding \7 characters, and it's flat-out impossible to get mysql or any mysql tools to make them visible.
