It looks like phpMyAdmin, MySQL, PHP and RSS collectively have some kind of bananas encoding issue which prevented me from putting the proper accents in the <title> field of that last new RSS <item>, so it says "Ara Orun" when it should say "Ará Orún"

It's staggering how muddled and ill-explained all of these issues are. No combination of escapes I could find could make this thing work. As far as I can tell, MySQL literally doesn't have a way to escape Unicode in a string literal

MySQL doesn't need to escape Unicode because it supports it directly. However, if you don't explicitly make the table's charset utf8, it will horribly mangle any input you try to throw at it.

Even if MySQL directly supported Unicode, which it or something in this stack clearly doesn't (I pasted the string, it came out wrong), it would still need Unicode escapes

we have a thing that's accidentally embedding \7 characters, and it's flat-out impossible to get mysql or any mysql tools to make them visible.
