The axioms of (modern) Superman: 1) Superman will always try to do the right thing. 2) Superman can do anything he tries to do. It's such a simple premise, I don't see how many people don't get it / feel trapped enough by it that they try to ignore it.
"What if Superman was evil" is a mystifying premise because the whole concept of Superman is "what if a person with tremendous power was, for a change, NOT evil"

He's like Goku in that sense - a man, that's unable to be broken. A man with a strong core that gets challenged over and over and always proves himself worthy of the position he occupies.
