Oh right, a furlong is 1/8 of a mile, so an acre is 1/(8*80) = 1/640 of a square mile. Take it to a useful number of acres, like 1000, and it comes out to a reasonable 1.25 sqmi. It's just the choice of 1e6 specifically that puts the √10 in there, 1e5 or 1e7 look nicer.
