In german a hedgehog is called “Igel”, and a sea urchin is a “Seeigel”.
French: hedgehog: hérisson (“bristling thing”) sea-urchin: oursin (“bear-like”) Interesting that the consonants match... “r..s..n”, but Latin roots seem to be separate: ericius (hedgehog) and ursus (bear), respectively, so that may be coincidence.
I have only come across this in the prologue to "An urchin in the rain" by Stephen J Gould, where he explains "In England, hedgehogs are called urchins." No idea who told him that.
