Almost all computer systems measure time internally as a number of seconds elapsed since midnight UTC on 1 January 1970. So if you're jumping through time but you forget to set a destination time, it will probably default to 0, and take you to the beginning of 1970 instead

There's a feature of many theories of time travel which states that you can't go back further than the invention of the first time machine. So you can find out if time machines have been secretly developed by looking for misconfigured ones appearing every 2^32 seconds.

Or at some point in the far future the date of the 0 point gets moved to when sixty thousand misconfigured time machines will appear!

I forget which book I read, but it was sufficiently far in the future that they believed Unix 0 to represent the moon landing. So maybe this is why we haven't gone back, nobody wants to explain the temporal junkyard surrounding the lander.
