just imagine pitching the concept of a "phone book" now yeah, everybody for a dozen miles in every direction knows your phone number and home address and most of your real name. this is the default behaviour for all phone services imagine trying to get that past GDPR

Pretty much all pre-crypto-wars tech is hilariously dependent upon good faith & norms. Phone books are one thing, but consider checks. Credit cards. Our financial infrastructure is based on wishful thinking & inconsistent post-facto enforcement.

I don't think we've gotten worse, or on the other hand that our current countermeasures are unnecessary. Tech super-empowers individuals outside a social context. The internet made every jerk free-rider into batman.

even pre-GDPR that seems kinda spooky. I'm having trouble imagining why this was not considered a risk. I guess it kinda was, as documented in the first Terminator.
