So anyway my point is that much of the value provided by GitHub is totally unrelated to Git itself, and the choice of underlying version control software is kind of academic

It's okay to admit that there's more to a programming job than just writing and hosting the code. That those centralised workflow tools are crucial. That without them the job cannot be done

While I agree with you in general, we moved from gitlab to github with trivial ease and no loss of history. Git underlying github is actually very strong. Of course our bugs are still in jira.
