Handmaid's Tale is trendy right now, but this passage from Atwood's Alias Grace seems apropos.

  2. Iannucci's work is at its best when he lets these moments of tenderness or gravity cut through the gleeful bile. (Late seasons of The Thick of It, also the very end of The Death of Stalin are good examples.) Veep never really had those moments or earned them imo. I'm sorry!!!

  5. ...in both, extreme life-or-death scenarios. I rewatched the last season of TTOI—which felt so dramatic and even tragic at the time—and the drama of an inquiry into leaking seems so ... small compared to everything we're dealing with now. No wonder you need space as a canvas

  6. Ave 5 is interesting read against Death of Stalin (also Ianucci)—the only way you can really grapple with doom and gloom of the present moment is by moving away from hectic, petty, small-bore political satire and jumping either back in time or forward. You need a different canvas

  7. The Thick of It was very uneven at the beginning too before they really figured out that Malcolm was the main character. (Veep, imo, never really gelled because it never quite found its withered heart in the same way.) So I will give it time; fingers crossed HBO does as well

  9. They’ll do that to any Dem who wins, but a useful datapoint in evaluating the sincerity of Republicans arguing that impeachment shouldn’t be partisan.

  11. My worry is that Trump has so defined down DOJ independence that "going through the proper channels" seems like a win. The president shouldn't be pushing a foreign country to investigate a US citizen via his private lawyer. He also shouldn't be pushing DOJ to do it either!

The idea that anyone who is politically active would support Biden but not Warren, Bernie but not Klobuchar, or Buttigieg but not Yang in the general election.... is risable. There is no defensible “theory of politics” that justifies doing so.

2020 is the last chance to show that there are costs for gross abuse of presidential power and relentless obstruction. And that’s merely one set of existential, or at least ginormous, stakes.

That the Senate has soiled itself to badly, so publicly, so irrevocably is not the greatest shock, it’s that they have done so on behalf of an ignorant, immature man who has insulted, disrespected and ridiculed them on his least whim.
