"Similar management of agricultural ecosystems thus offers potential for short-term carbon sequestration." And what does that management look like? Agroforestry, silvopastoralism, Forest gardening and holistic raising management.

This short-term "soilworld thermostat" of the biogeographic redistribution of ecosystems complements the long-term evolution of terrestrial carbon sequestration, which curbed the effects of solar radiation increases over billions of years.

When CO2 levels drop, deserts and permafrost expand, reducing the expanse of carbon-catching ecosystems. Soil carbon really does look to be a primary regulator of Earth's temperature throughout our wordl's living history - i.e. Earth's thermostat.

The idea is easy to grasp: the regulation of planetary temperature is driven by photosynthesis. Following large releases of CO2, carbon-catching ecosystems expand, both poleward and into drylands.

James Lovelock suggested the Gaia hypothesis to explain this puzzle. Now, Gregory Retallack is putting some flesh on those bones with his extraordinary paper in Astrobiology. (PDF here: )

Why did Earth not become a Venus-like hellhole when volcanoes spewed huge amounts of CO2? Why did she not turn into a Mars-like snowball when weathering pulled CO2 almost to zero?

Here is the data on that. Yes, it was was extremely common that children died, as you say. But that was not the only reason for low life expectancy. Mortality at higher ages was also very high. Much higher than today. And so it was the case that exactly half were dead by 45.

The would like to draw attention to these remarkably ill-informed tweets by who continue to disparage the robust, peer-reviewed science that underpins the Farmland Bird Index and make clearly unfounded criticisms.

I know that this is an unpopular view, but the fact that President Biden has accomplished as much as he has despite a Congress that can’t function and a judiciary that thinks there’s a Let’s Go Brandon Clause in the Constitution is a testament to his skill as an executive.

I'm not the first to have noted this bit of dissonance, but perhaps worth reiterating.

I am deeply concerned about the metaverse and other stuff that replaces the real world. You can't love that which you don't know. We won't address the climate and biodiversity crises without a deep love for our world. We need to toss those VR helmets and go for a walk.
