Now, I promised and I will not disappoint. Today is all about plasticity, and here's our example of a trade-off between tolerance and plasticity of the same trait. 's Trade-Off Hypothesis is shown in intertidal nudis, where high tolerance = low plasticity

The snarky voice in my head* also REALLY wanted to ask everyone wearing a mask if they’d gotten their flu shot. Because, y’know, THAT might actually stop you getting infected by something. Probably cheaper than the mask, too. *this is why I’m not an MD. No bedside manner.

An N95 mask works. “But they’re uncooomfortable!” Tough shit - that’s how you know it’s working. (Seriously - filters fine enough to impede viral transmission slow airflow.)

I saw SO MANY people today wearing masks that offer little to no protection against coronaviruses or any other viral or bacterial transmission. Pollen masks? Scarves? Loose-fitting surgical masks that don’t cover the nose? Nope.

This “mask” - which is really a headband/scarf thing - does NOTHING to block viruses.

As a trained scientist and a self-taught artist, the strongest commonalities I see between science and art are the ways they teach and enable us to understand the world around us. Drawing hard lines between the disciplines denies their overlap. Many great scientists were artists

Delicious foods many people can’t spell: ganache, beurre blanc, gnocchi, coulis, shakshuka, haricots vert, remoulade, chermoula, broccoli, zucchini, meringue, casserole, étouffeé... I can go on.

Ten years ago today, The Lancet retracted Andrew Wakefield’s fraudulent 1998 article claiming the MMR vaccine caused autism. He performed procedures on children unethically, paid kids at a birthday party to give him blood samples, and doctored data. He still claims he was right.

Happy palindrome day, whether you write the date DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY or even if you put the year first for some weird reason. 02/02/2020 is the only such date this century. The last one was over 900 years ago, on 11/11/1111. SO DON’T WASTE IT.
