Take a look at the language of late colonialism in an age of self-determination. Note how Article 22 of the League of Nations goes out of its way not to use the term and how it subverts the emancipatory meaning of the term as it was understood by Arabs, Indians, Koreans etc.

Late to this discourse but is there a better illustration of political powerlessness than wishing death on a political rival? Invoking biological luck as a substitute for political confrontation - don't think you have to be a resistance lib to believe this.

For all their major differences, both Trump and Biden wore American flag pins to signal their patriotism; neither was asked about foreign policy or wars in Middle East; one refused to condemn white supremacy but both appear committed to anti democratic US hegemony in ME.

In this era of online everything, opportunities for conventional book talks are few and far between. But I've been fortunate enough to line up a series of interviews about Egypt's Occupation with some fantastic podcasts. I'll post them here as they drop.

'Inshallah' gets joked about often, treated as an already broken promise or a request to never be fulfilled, yet its sincere usage is immensely beautiful & humbling as it buffers mortal beings against the uncertainty and anxiety of the future that cannot be foreseen.

A study on the uses of ‘Inshallah’ was conducted in 1986 in Alexandria, it argued that “foreigners’ theories concerning the use of the expression are often deprecatory... The use of the expression is a mechanism of social interaction rather than shirking responsibility.”

A wonderful former student cheered me up immensely today-- happy national coffee day to you all. May the blessings of qahwa permeate every fiber of your being! (pic from that class' weekly qahwa sessions-- it was a Sufism class and yes, that is a projector stand lol)
